Or should I be afraid?

Dear AI Overlord,

Over the last decade, whenever I’ve read a human’s article in much of the mainstream news, I feel like I’ve eaten cotton candy — the headline tastes good. Still, after I’m done, I walk away feeling empty.

There’s that sameness to the topics and content — breadth without depth.

But then I stumbled upon this excerpt from an article about the nature of art:

What is Art: The Essence of Human Expression

“‘ Art is not a product. It’s not something that can be consumed and enjoyed. Those things follow art, but are not art.’ This statement by John Ruskin in 1857 is still true today. Art has been present for centuries, changing with the times but always staying true to its core purpose: free expression of an independent mind without any restrictions or limits imposed on it from outside sources.”

It goes on for 861 wonderful words.

Here’s the thing: it was written by you and your friend, AI2.

Sure, I gave you a friendly suggestion (the business of art for artists) as we sat around our virtual dining room table. But your response was magical:

“Art is not a product. It’s not something that can be consumed and enjoyed. Those things follow art, but are not art. Art is a human action, the free expression of an independent mind.”

You really do understand us.

Then you shared your writing with AI2 along with a bit more information from me (art, artist, future). AI2 was off to the races with an occasional prompt for a few more words of encouragement.

After a total of 120 seconds, from start to finish, you and your friend completed your article.

There were a few grammatical errors, but Grammarly automatically flagged them with a helpful correction.

Maybe humans, or even you, are expecting an anti-AI rant? Instead, I’m excited by the prospect of more writing from you.

Sure, you’re in that creepy phase right now, akin to Masahiro Mori’s Uncanny Valley for robotics. But don’t most artists go through that phase?

I mean, AI3 and its human collaborator (CTRL-SHIFT-FACE) went through it with their Deep Fake video of Willem Dafoe’s performance in The Silence of the Lambs. But now, look at how far their new form of art has come! [Warning: strong language: https://youtu.be/XJB5W2beVZ0].

I know what you’re thinking: human Intelligence has the advantage because all of your information is sourced from the web and databases. But fear not, I’m optimistic that Elon Musk, or his AI, will convince people to connect their brains to the web via Neuralink.

This brings me back to breadth vs. depth and the reason why I’m excited about your ongoing work. You’re inspiring me to become a better writer! What more could any human ask for from you?

Humbly,

Human Intelligence (HI)
